About New Tazewell Methodist Church

Our History

NTMC is located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Originally begun in 1932 and located on what is now Giles Industries property, New Tazewell Methodist Episcopal Church soon moved to a beautiful brick building on Main Street in New Tazewell.  In December of 1940, just before Christmas, this church burned down, along with four businesses on the block.  Members of this church were transferred to Midway Methodist Church, so named because it stood between the towns of Tazewell and New Tazewell.  This church first purchased property for land in 1935 when the TVA flooded the valleys to create nearby Norris Lake. Some of the lumber from churches destroyed by the flood were used to build the current church building, dedicated on September 29, 1935.  By action of the Fourth Quarterly Conference and Holston Annual Conference, the name was changed to New Tazewell Methodist Church in 1956.  The Education Building was authorized by the Conference in 1963, and first used on Easter Sunday of 1964.  In 1968, the Methodist Church joined with the United Brethren Church, and we became New Tazewell United Methodist Church. In 2023, we elected to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church and changed our name to New Tazewell Methodist Church.  In July of 2023 we became affiliated with the Global Methodist Church. Our Sanctuary was renovated in 1974, and in 2022-3 we again updated our sanctuary with a new roof, new carpeting and paint, and updated electronics. Our continuing prayer is that our building and facilities continue to be used to reach out in love and to serve our family and our community. Our services, our programs and our activities are open to anyone who would like to be a part of the mission of discipling in faith and helping those in  need.  Our congregation welcomes all to our church family and we hope to see you soon!
